The process to reserve a username will be simple and secure to make connections seamlessly with Meta’s existing ecosystem. Users will start by just entering their username they already use on Facebook or Facebook that ensure consistency across platforms.
The Meta-owned messaging app will guide the users through a verification process confirming ownership via Meta’s Accounts Center once they submit their username. With this integration, the meta-owned ensures that only the rightful owner can reserve that specific handle.
It will automatically associate the confirmed username with the user’s account after successful verification. This means the username will be officially reserved and protected within WhatsApp’s system. If another user gains access to the full username feature before the reservation holder, then they will not be able to claim the other username.
This ensures the early reservations feature remains valid and secure for those who have already verified their ownership. One of the important things to note is that it seems the reserve username on WhatsApp may be limited to users who already have the same username on Facebook or Instagram.
It means that users who want to reserve an entirely new username that is not linked to their existing Facebook or Instagram accounts may not be able to reserve the username currently. The reserve username on WhatsApp is currently under development and expected to be implemented before 2026.
