After a long wait of close to nine years, the Tekken franchise finally dropped the eighth installment. And the game has already made an impact in the industry with new elements in play. The graphics and gameplay of the game are a leap forward as compared to its predecessor. With new characters in action and increased weight of story mode, Tekken 8 could be dubbed the rank one contender in the fighting games genre.

That being said, whenever there are two legends in the same era, the comparison is inevitable, just like Ronaldo and Messi. The case is identical with Tekken and the Mortal Kombat franchise as they are in a continuous war to get to the top spot in the fighting games genre.

While Mortal Kombat refreshed its lineup with the late game Mortal Kombat 1, which launched in September 2023, Tekken 8 is a continuation of the story that has been relevant since the first game of the franchise.

Tekken 8 vs Mortal Kombat 1

Different gaming communities out there are having mixed reactions regarding the fighting mechanics of both games. Mortal Kombat is not for the faint-hearted, as the combos one wants to hit (along with the fatalities and brutalities) are difficult to fathom.

On the other hand, Tekken 8 has made the brawls more interesting with a new heat factor that gives the character a burst mode in which they can throw powerful attacks on the opponents with a single button push.

Mortal Kombat 1 has a total number of 30 characters, including the announced DLCs like Homelander, Omni-Man, etc. As for Tekken 8, it has around 32 characters, along with new ones like Vector Chevalier, Reina, etc.

The DLC characters of the game, apart from Eddy Gordo, are yet to be announced. Tekken 8 offers more than 100 attacks and combos for every character in the game. Mortal Kombat doesn’t have a large roster of attacks but tries to balance the same out with superpowers for each character.

Coming to the story mode, we can say that this is a section where Tekken 8 eats up Mortal Kombat like a hungry kid will have McMeal. The Mortal Kombat story mode is more like lore with no adrenaline rush or anything that could possibly amaze the gamer.

On the contrary, Tekken 8 has an exemplary story to offer, along with the best character development and cut scenes. The most intriguing part about the same is that the story mode is newcomer-friendly.

For example, if gamers are new to the Tekken verse and are unfamiliar with the story so far, they could simply get the recaps of all Tekken game stories in the gallery. Tekken 8 story mode can be completed in five to six hours, and it consists of 15 chapters. All in all, the story mode of Tekken 8 looks like something straight out of an action anime.

On a concluding note

Without taking any sides, both the games have their pros and cons. The superpowers in Mortal Kombat 1 make the characters more deadly. Nonetheless, Tekken 8 has replied to the same with the heat burst and rage art moves in the gameplay. High-end graphics are something that the gamers will get to see in both titles.

One thing that will give the Tekken franchise nightmares is the flashy roster of Mortal Kombat 1 DLC characters like Peacemaker, Homelander, Omni-Man, etc. In Tekken 7, the DLC content included some of the most celebrated characters – Noctis from the Final Fantasy universe, The Walking Dead fame Negan, etc. Speculations are that we could see a decent DLC roster for Tekken 8 as well.
