WhatsApp rolling out new Companion mode

WhatsApp is releasing a new extension of multi-device support that allows users to link their existing account to another mobile phone. Users have now the ability to link an existing WhatsApp account to an additional mobile phone.

Users can now access their chats on their second device without requiring an active internet connection on their main phone once they link their existing WhatsApp account to a secondary phone. Currently, users can only use an Android phone or a tablet as a second device.

The companion mode is currently not available for iOS users. But iPhone users can link a second Android phone as the new companion mode feature is available for Android users.

Link Secondary Android mobile phone

To link a secondary Android mobile phone, users have to download the latest beta of WhatsApp Messenger or WhatsApp Business on their secondary Android mobile phone. After this, they have to tap on the overflow menu within the registration screen and they will finally see the “Link a device” option.

Now they have to open WhatsApp on their primary device tap on three dots then tap on the Linked Devices option. Point the primary device to their secondary mobile phone to capture the QR Code.

When the user links their WhatsApp account to a new mobile, their chat history will be synced across all their linked devices. Users can link up to four devices simultaneously which means they can link more than two mobile phones to their WhatsApp account.

All personal messages and calls of users remain end-to-end encrypted even when using WhatsApp from a linked mobile phone. When someone sends a message then it will be sent to all linked devices while maintaining end-to-end encryption.

The Companion mode is rolling for all Android beta testers but some features may still not be available for users such as the mange broadcast lists and posting status updates from a linked device. The new Companion mode is available on the Android beta version 2.23.8.2 and newer versions.
