WhatsApp is working on a new feature called search and call using a username. This feature will allow users to search and call others using usernames. They will be able to make calls using usernames instead of phone numbers. It simplifies the way to connect with people on the platform while maintaining their privacy.
Users will be able to search for usernames within the Calls tab once this feature becomes available in beta or a stable version. This is the easier way for users to place voice and video calls without needing to share their phone numbers.
WhatsApp is working on a Search and Call using Username feature
To use the search and call using the username, users have to enter a username into the search field. Once the users enter their username then the meta-owned messaging app will scan its internal systems to check if an account with that exact identifier exists. If the account with the matching users is found, it will appear within the search results list along with the basic profile information.
The profile information is based on the user’s privacy settings. From this screen, they will be able to select the account to view limited public details, such as the profile photo if it is set to be visible to everyone by the users. Once they select their desired account, the meta-owned messaging app will show available options to start a voice or video call directly to them.
All the calling features available in regular calls on WhatsApp are also supported for calls made through usernames. Users’ sensitive data will be secure in search during the lookup, except for information users choose to share publicly, such as their profile picture. It ensures that the users have secure discovery, connection, and communication through usernames.
