Was second season of this series planned beforehand?
Hwang Dong-hyuk, the series’ writer and director had originally proposed the potential of continuing the series. He wasn’t sure if that would actually work because most of the K-dramas usually conclude in only one season.
But luckily with a love of fans, squid game was a record breaker and of course it let Netflix official to greenlit the second season of Squid Game.

Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) will return in Season 2 of Squid Game as per Hwang’s Twitter message.
Now that we know he won the game, but instead of spending his 45 billion Won (USD$ 35 million) prize money, he spent his days re-thinking about the crimes that occurred on the hidden island. Gi-hun is a fascinating character who has risen from poverty, but his principles are stopping him from living a peaceful life.
Moreover, it was also hinted by the writer that the former cop (Lee Byung-hun) might return who oversees the crimes conducted at the hidden island.

Release date
The writer and director of the record breaker squid game has mentioned in an interview that the release of second season can be at the end of 2023 or even at the beginning of 2024. Apart from that, he also shared his concern about the story because he has only written 3 pages and unsure about how to take it further.
However, officials apart from Hwang haven’t said anything about the release dates about the next season. The show might air during the end of 2023, beginning of 2024 or maybe we will have to wait until there’s an official announcement regarding the release date.
