There is a QR code and users need to scan that QR code to start sharing the file on an iOS device. However, Android users will need to use the same nearby device detection method to share their files.
The new feature will enhance the file transfer experience because they don’t need to rely on an internet connection to share their files with others.
Users have to grant necessary permission including the option to be discoverable by nearby users (maybe location) to work the new People Nearby feature. They also have to grant permission to access the storage and media files, locations, and other ability to connect with other devices (Bluetooth) on the local network.

This feature is useful for large files such as high-resolution photos, videos, and documents, especially in areas with limited or unstable network coverage. It also works across different platforms including Android and iOS.
The People Nearby feature to share files is end-to-end encrypted ensuring only the intended recipients can access the content just like Messages and Calls are secured with end-to-end encrypted on the platform.

The Phone number will be hidden throughout the transfer process to secure the users’ privacy in case they are sharing files with those with whom they don’t want to stay connected in the future.
The People Nearby feature looks and works similarly to Samsung Quick Share and Google Nearby Share (Now Quick Share after partnering with Samsung) which transfers files between two nearby devices.
