WhatsApp is rolling out the new account security features that add a new layer of protection to users’ accounts. This new feature adds an extra layer of protection that helps prevent someone from taking over a user’s account, even if they get hold of a verification code.
With this new update, Meta-owned messaging apps add stronger two-step verification, more context for unknown calls, and a new option for passkeys.
WhatsApp New Account Security Features
WhatsApp is upgrading the traditional six-digit PIN to a stronger password. Users can now create longer alphanumeric passwords with special characters that are harder for any malicious actor to guess.
Two-step verfications feature works as an additional barrier for users, even if they manage to get a one-time passcode that is needed to sign into a WhatsApp account. If you have been using a “123456” PIN for your account, then it’s time to upgrade.
WhatsApp is also rolling out the More context before you pick up feature for account security. When you get a call from an unknown caller, a little context can help you decide whether to pick up the call.
This feature helps users identify potentially suspicious interactions by showing more information about the caller, like whether the number is from a different county and if you have any groups in common before answering.
The Meta-owned messaging app is also expanding its passkeys support feature with new options for multiple devices. Users can now add more than one passkey to their account if they use both Android and iOS devices. They have to go to settings >Account>Passkeys.
Passkeys allow users to log back into WhatsApp with their fingerprint, Face ID, or screen lock code. It is the fastest and most secure way to verify it’s really you and your account belongs to you without codes or PINs.
