The Tekken franchise has marked its presence in the fighting games genre with some of the best titles. The franchise dropped Tekken 7 in the market in February 2015, and the game took the industry by storm. However, the wait for the Tekken 8 game started after half a decade as the fans wanted to see what would happen next in the Tekken lore.

Finally, after almost a decade, Tekken released the eighth game from the series in February 2024, and it is blowing the minds of the gaming community. Tekken 8 game could be dubbed everything that we missed in other fighting games that have been released in recent years.

As for the graphics, the game is going to steal your heart with the new animations and camera angles of attacking and defense. A series of new characters have also been introduced in the game, along with developers focusing on improving the fighting mechanics.

I got my hands on the game this week and completed the story mode in a single go. And here I am with a Tekken 8 review for you people so that it becomes easier to make a purchase decision. In this review, I will talk about all the aspects of the game in detail.

The Dark Awakens Story

Tekken outclasses all its competitors when it comes to story modes. The Tekken 8 also meets the expectations in the story mode. You can see the story mode title’ The Dark Awakens’, and it is a whole new world inside the game.

This time, I can claim that the writers have focused on making the story super immersive with 15 chapters to explore the great Tekken lore. In the first chapter, we get to see Jin making a move on Kazuya but failing to defeat him due to the difference in their powers. What hit me the most was that Jin is on a redemption journey this time, and he doesn’t want to let Devil Jin take over his body.

The story moves forward with Jin trying to find ways to suppress the devil gene in him and still defeat Kazuya. Meanwhile, a lot happens as Kazuya puts a bounty on Zafina in order to release Azazel (the boss in Tekken 6). Things take a wild turn when, in the King of the Iron Fist Tournament, Azazel gets released, and Kazuya defeats him in order to get all his powers and become True Devil Kazuya.

But as we all know that darkness never wins, we will also get to see the True Angel Jin in the last couple of episodes in story mode. The final battle between son and father looks like a war between gods, and it can be dubbed one as well. If you are someone who watches anime shows and likes an extraordinary soap opera kind of thing, then Tekken 8 story mode is going to make you stick with your couch for almost 4 to 5 hours straight.

Heat System

It can be said that the developers have tried everything to make the gameplay more than amazing. One of the most phenomenal additions to the game is the Heat system.

Now, if you are well versed in the Tekken games, then you know we already have the Rage system that can be triggered once your health bar is on the verge of ending. But the Heat system works in a different way.

You can go on an offensive move right at the beginning of the game by triggering the Heat system. The only thing you need to know is when to use it to enforce more damage on the opponents.

As soon as you trigger the Heat system, the character attacks get super modified and cause a great deal of damage against the opponents. If you are a button-smasher, then the Heat system is going to give you a high dose of adrenaline every time.

Special Style

"Heat
Heat System

Another major addition to the Tekken 8 gameplay is the Special Style. This style is specifically for the players who are new to the Tekken world or the ones who don’t play it on a professional level. This style offers you different buttons to initiate some of the most dangerous combos, giving your opponents a run for their lives.

After trying it for almost a week, I can say that it is more than fun because remembering all the deadly combos based on buttons is difficult, and applying them in a tense match is more twisted. The style could seem a little boring when playing against the CPU, as the attacks are the same every time. However, it is a lifesaver when you are trying to prove your command in Tekken while beating a friend.

Arcade Quest

"Arcade
Arcade Quest

The freshly-baked Arcade Quest mode of Tekken 8 is definitely going to give you the nostalgia of visiting the arcade players. All those memories of putting coins in the machine to make the game move forward, playing Tekken for long hours, getting your hands rated by button-smashing, all of that is going to get revived.

There is a single-player mode as well that allows you to create custom avatars like Snapchat and then indulge in the arcade mode. The best part about the same is that you will get extra money in the same based on the amount of aggression shown in the game.

The final goal will be to bag the Tekken God title. Nevertheless, make sure that you know that the road is not super smooth, and you have to go through a lot of obstacles in order to become the Tekken God.

Character Episodes

"Character
Character Episodes

Like every other Tekken game, Tekken 8 also gets a character episode mode where you can get a story moving forward for all the characters available in the game. However, there is nothing serious about it as most of these stories end in a funny way without connecting them to the main story of Tekken.

This can be a bit disappointing for the players who want a serious connection between the characters. Apart from that, if you are looking for fun, then character episodes are something you want to try to add a little more fun to your Tekken Journey.

The Return of Tekken Ball

One of the most missed game modes, Tekken Ball, is making a comeback in the eighth installment. The model was previously seen in the Tekken Tag Tournament 2. You can see the event taking place on a beach where there will be two characters from Tekken 8 trying their best to keep the rainbow-colored ball in the air. The one who drops it more on the ground loses. The model is very similar to what we got to see in Tekken 7 with the Tekken bowling game.

Super Ghost Battle

"Super
Super Ghost Battle

The Tekken 8 Super Ghost Battle lets you battle out NPC ghosts and grab the experience you need to face the real fighters. Moreover, the game also offers rank-ups and rewards along with occasional costumes for different characters. You can also play against your own ghost in the game, and it will let you see which moves you spam in the game and how you can improve your gameplay.

At the time of testing, I can say that getting beaten by yourself in the game gives you a different kind of satisfaction. But beating yourself and enhancing your in-game performance is more than satisfactory. You can also use the ghosts of other players to see how they perform in-game.

Tekken 8 Performance

I am running the game on Asus TUF Dash F15, and the game has zero issues in any operations. The battles were running at 60 frames per second on the Ultra settings. However, trying the online mode of the game opened up the path for some issues. For example, the character intros were a bit slow compared to the flow in offline mode.

By god’s grace, there was no difference in the gameplay, and it shows who Robus, the backend of Tekken 8, is. It is a visually rich game, and the stages like Arena and Stratosphere make it all more appealing.
