Recently, the Meta-owned messaging app has introduced a new feature to import profile photos from Facebook or Instagram. It allows users to choose whether they want to import their profile picture directly from one of these services. It makes it easier for users to keep their profile picture up to date by quickly selecting a photo from platforms they already use.

WhatsApp Address book profile photo feature rolling out

WhatsApp’s new Profile photo from address book feature is designed to automatically sync profile photos when users have not set one. It replaces blank profiles with a photo from the address book. It means if a user has not set a profile picture, the meta-owned messaging app can use the saved image from the contact card.

However, this new feature only affects the view on the user’s device and doesn’t change the contact’s actual profile picture. In addition, only contacts that the users have given permission to WhatsApp to access will have the profile photo updated. It helps users to easily and quickly identify contacts without a profile photo by more than just their name.

The meta-owned messaging app uses the profile photos saved in the address book in two cases. The first case is for the user’s own profile picture. If any users don’t set up their profile picture, the meta-owned will show their contact card photo in the app settings.

But other users won’t see that photo. Your photo from your address book is only used to show a photo instead of an empty profile to yourself.

The second case is when other users cannot see your profile photo. In the second case, the meta-owned messaging app shows the photo they have saved in their address book, if one exists. If you have set your privacy setting for profile photo to “Nobody” or “My contacts except”, some users may not be able to see your profile picture.

However, if they have your profile photo saved in their address book, then the meta-owned messaging app will display that photo instead on their own device.

The new feature to replace blank profiles with photos from the address book is currently available to some beta testers on WhatsApp for iOS.
