Every country has its identification authentication number peculiar to its citizen. The Aadhaar number is a 12-digit random number that serves as a unique authentication verification number for every Indian Citizen. It is issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) for free.

What is a Masked Aadhaar Card?

To minimize the rate at which people complained about fraudulent activities involving their UIDAI, the Indian Government advised its citizen to mask their Aadhaar Card for security purposes. Therefore, a masked Aadhaar card is one whose 12-digit number has been masked using an asterisk (*). Usually, the first eight (1-8) digits are masked leaving the remaining 4-digits visible.

Citizens can now get a masked Aadhaar card when downloading their e-Aadhaar cards from the official UIDAI website. The e-Aadhaar is an electronic copy of the Aadhaar card that has the backing of the UIDAI after downloading it from their website. There is a prohibition on sharing the photocopy of the downloaded e-Aadhaar with a second party to avoid misuse as well. The E-Aadhaar is password protected.

Why should you cover your Aadhaar Card?

An officially issued Aadhaar card that is not masked contains the individual’s personal information and the 12- digit number unique to the person is visible. Masking of the Aadhaar card prevents the owner from being indicted for any fraudulent case which will emanate from personal information or from the 12-digit number that may be linked to the Aadhaar number.

Because of this security concern, the government of India advised its citizens to avoid sharing any unmasked Aadhaar card or its photocopy. But to share only photocopies of the masked Aadhaar Card.
